P. D. Q. Bach (1807-1742?): Sonata 'Abassoonata' S. 888

Jeffrey Lyman performs both bassoon and piano in P. D. Q. Bach's Sonata "Abassoonata", which turned out to be somehow appropriate for a postpandemic recital. The movements are:
1. Allegro soso
2. Andante con moped
3. Allegro assaionara

(And yes, there are plenty of mistakes: I'm not a pianist and I'm not supposed to be, which is part of the joke!)

Peter Schickele originally intended for bassoonists to pretend that their pianist was somehow delayed, prompting the bassoonist to sit at the piano and play. This would not work on a recital that already featured several works for bassoon and piano, hence the new attempt at a humorous introduction. One word of explanation: when Matt Thompson stops to say that his "ResponsiBLUE" has expired, that's in reference to our daily checkin app at the University of Michigan that checks for COVID symptoms. That provided the opening joke and I hope the rest makes sense after that.

Recorded live on October 29, 2021 in Britton Recital Hall, Moore Music Building, University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Videography by Dave Schall of DaveSchallSound.
