Packing for Grade V Alpine Routes

Follow
Skills for Climbing

Grade V climbing routes require bivouacing (sleeping) somewhere along the technical section of the climbing route where the terrain is flat enough to accommodate a lying (or sometimes sitting) person. Packing for such long and committing objectives requires special consideration, since you will be doing fifthclass climbing with an overnight pack and you need to keep the pack light and compact but still have what you need for the weather and terrain. Examples of routes in the Pacific Northwest where this may be necessary include the TormentForbiddenTraverse, Liberty Ridge on Mt. Rainier, North Face of Mt. Shuksan, North Ridge or NW Face of Forbidden Peak, Mt. Stuart's Complete North Ridge, and the West Arete of Eldorado Peak.
