Painting sand structures in oil can be challenging. You can practice and get a feeling how to do it by watching this video. What helps me always is to study your reference photo as good as you can, zoom into the sand and try to locate the colors, the shadows and the shapes. It takes practice like everything else, but once you see your efforts pay of it will get easier each time.
