Painting tile floor and grout lines... a success!

Follow
Katherine Forbes

It's been over a year since I painted our guest bathroom tile floor (time flies!) and almost 10 months since painting the tile floor in the kitchen... and now, I can add painting the tile floor at my friend's house to the list too!

Last Friday and Saturday Emily and I (with a little help from her husband, Taylor) painted her bathroom ("Glam Room") floor and took it from the classic beige tile to white and gray. I mean, who doesn't love a white, bright bathroom, right?

I let her borrow my drill brush beforehand so she could clean the floor and sent her to Home Depot to get some Krud Kutter, paint brushes, and rollers.

PAINTING YOUR TILE FLOOR? Here are my top tips:
• Clean your floors really well with Krud Kutter the CLEANER & DEGREASER kind, that's important. Your floor needs to be super clean so the paint can stick to it.
• Wear clean socks! If you leave the room during the painting process, change your socks (because if you have pets, you probably picked up some hair along the way). Also, after your first coat, the floor will be a funny texture (I don't want to say "sticky" because it's not sticky), and I've found that wearing socks and sitting on towels helps.
• Charge your dustbuster before you start... you'll still be using it often
• The paint can says you only need one base coat. That's not true, especially if you do a lighter color! It also recommends one top coat, I've always done two of that as well.
• After your FIRST coat of the base "color," you have to wait SIX hours before doing a second coat. If you decide to do any more after that though (like adding a pattern, painting the grout, etc.) you only have to wait ONE hour. The first coat just needs extra time to set.
• If you plan to do two top coats, you have to wait ONE hour after the first to apply the second. BUT, you must do the second top coat within 24 hours of the first. AND THEN... once you do your final top coat, you can't touch/walk on the floors for 24 hours, and you can't use any cleaning products on it for 7 days.
