In the early 1870s, the renowned painter Thomas Moran traveled on two geological surveys out West. Those expeditions inspired two wonderful paintings – "The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone" (1872) and "The Chasm of the Colorado" (187374) – which galvanized Congress into establishing Yellowstone as the first ever National Park, and generated an explosion of interest in the West across the United States.
