This video is about the biological basis of autoimmune encephalitis (AE), which are a group of disorders that target the brain. The most common types of AE are PANDAS and PANS, which are caused by an autoimmune response to streptococcal infections. Other types of AE include antiNMDA receptor encephalitis, antiGAD65 encephalitis, and opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome (OMS).

PANDAS is short for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. A child may be diagnosed with PANDAS when: Obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), tic disorder, or both suddenly appear following a streptococcal (strep) infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever.
