Notaries have always played an important role in society, but COVID19
proved how essential they truly are. Watch to learn what the pandemic taught us.

NNA VP of Government Affairs Bill Anderson shares lessons learned from the pandemic in his keynote presentation recorded at the 2022 Maryland Notary Public Day Conference hosted by Trusted Agent Services Group LLC.

1. Notaries are in demand. Notary services were highly sought after during the pandemic, especially for medical powers of attorney, estate planning, and mortgage loan closings.

2. Notaries are resourceful. Not only were Notaries faced with an increased demand for their services, they also had to adhere to social distancing protocols during notarizations. Notaries met with signers outside in garages, on porches, through windows, and even sidebyside in cars.

3. Notaries are essential. The U.S. Treasury Secretary recognized Notaries Public as essential workers alongside those working in defense, agriculture, and healthcare among others. To help them carry out their jobs, 39 states authorized temporary remote Notary sessions.

4. Notaries need standards of professional practice. With national attention on Notaries, there was an expectation for Notaries to perform their services to the highest standards. Temporary orders, social distancing protocols, and technological changes made it more challenging for new Notaries entering the field. They realized there was more to validating documents than they expected.

From these lessons learned Anderson shifts his focus toward the immediate future, where he anticipates that standards for technologybased Notaries will emerge.
