PARAMPARIK THE TRADITION

Here is Pandit Sanjay Mukherjee , someone who never repeats himself. Someone who never gets old.
Many a tabla nawaz and pakhawaj maestro had made Kolkata their first or second home right from the time of Wajid Ali Shah. We’ll hear some of that magic from our senior most artist today, someone who has been a standard fixture of Bengali culture since the midseventies : Pandit Sanjay Mukherjee . We love him because he stands away from the bazaar, away from the media glare, always improvising, always experimenting in his own space. He spent years and decades training under the maestros Anath Nath Bose, Shankar Ghosh and Gyan Prakash Ghosh, imbibing the sounds and ethos of Benares and Farrukhabad garanas.

Accompanying the tabla guru on Harmonium is his own disciple, Shri Hiranmay Mitra, an All India Radio A grade artist in vocals, tabla and harmonium. An unbelievable feat indeed.

Paramparik, for 19 years, has remained a unique organization with a unique vision, in the city of joy, a well known name in the Indian Classical music circles for nofrills music that has mijaz, ragdari, and melody. Founded in 2001 by the Kotali Gharana exponent Ruchira Panda, it started with the famed annual classical conference and then in 2003 the rural education and medical units became functional. Today Paramparik is very well known in the remote villages of Bengal due to a very successful Grad/PostGrad Scholarship Program for financially poor students. At the same time, almost all the greats of Hindustani Classical Music have performed on the Paramparik stage.
