पावनखिंडीतील लढाई १३ जुलै, १६६० रोजी विशाळगडाजवळील असलेल्या घोडखिंडीतील निकराची लढाई होती. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज यांचे सेनापती बाजी प्रभू देशपांडे आणि आदिलशाही सरदार सिद्दी मसूद यांच्या सैन्यांत झालेल्या या लढाईत मराठ्यांचे बरेचसे सैनिक मारले गेले परंतु त्यांनी सिद्दी मसूदला खिंडीत थोपवून धरल्यामुळे शिवाजी महाराजांना तेथून निसटून विशाळगडावर जाण्यास वेळ मिळाला.
शिवाजी महाराजांनी १० नोव्हेंबर, १६५९ रोजी अफझलखानाचा वध केल्यावर मराठा सैन्य विद्युतवेगाने आदिलशाही मुलुख काबिज करीत निघाले होते. वर्ष संपता त्यांनी रुस्तुमे झमान आणि अफझलखानाचा मुलगा फाजल खान यांना हरवून कोल्हापूर जवळचा पन्हाळा जिंकून घेतला.[३] याचे पारिपत्य करण्यासाठी आदिलशहाने सिद्दी जौहरला दक्षिणेकडून चाल करण्यास फर्मावले व त्याच वेळी मुघलांशी संधान बांधून उत्तरेकडून हल्ला करविला. शिवाजी महाराज यावेळी पन्हाळ्यावर होते. सिद्दी जौहरने १६६० च्या सुरुवातीस पन्हाळ्याला वेढा घातला आणि किल्ल्याची पूर्ण रसद कापली. अनेक महिन्यांच्या वेढ्यानंतर पन्हाळ्याची स्थिती बिकट झाली आणि किल्ला शिकस्त होणार असे दिसू लागले. यावेळी शिवाजी महाराजांनी तेथून पळ काढून विशाळगडाकडे जाण्याचा बेत आखला.

Shivaji’s escape from the siege of Fort Panhala on a rainy night, the subsequent frantic chase given by the Bijapur forces and the battle of Pawankhind culminating in the inspiring sacrifice by Baji Prabhu Deshpande and 300 Maratha soldiers is the stuff of legends. The fable of Shiva Kashid, the barber who volunteered to dress up like his beloved King to misguide the enemy and assist in the escape, knowing well that a certain death lay in store provides a touching subtext.

The 75 Kmlong route of the escape is broadly known. It extends across a portion of Kolhapur district in Maharashtra, from Fort Panhala to Fort Vishalgad. On this route, Pawankhind lies at a distance of 55 Km from Fort Panhala. Even today, the landscape is as rugged, has few roads and is dotted with nothing more than quaint hillside villages, peopled by simple Marathas farmers or Dhangar shepherds.
Shivaji is not just a ruler who lived centuries ago. He is a sacred memory alive in the hearts and minds of the Marathis. No other royal figure of India commands such devotion. The trek from Panhala to Vishalgad is therefore, a mandatory annual fixture – almost a pilgrimage – for many adventure groups in Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur and Sangli. Since the date of the original operation was 13 July 1660, the trek too is performed in the month of July when the monsoon is usually in full fury in the Western Ghats.
