John Clemens of Ormond Beach, Florida, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2002. Medication helped quell the tremors initially. But as symptoms worsened, he decided to undergo surgery for deep brain stimulation.
Daryoush Tavanaiepour, MD, a neurosurgeon at UF Health Jacksonville, performed the multiphase operation in which a thin wire was implanted in John’s brain to deliver electrical stimulation to targeted areas, blocking abnormal nerve signals that cause the Parkinson’s symptoms.
