Parmenides: The Dawn of Western Metaphysics

Follow
Ian Withy-Berry

Parmenides of Elea is a preSocratic philosopher best known for his thesis of being. His sole work, On Nature, is composed of three sections: Proem, Reality, and Opinion. After exploring all three, this video acknowledges an apparent contradiction between sections of Reality and Opinion also known as the AD Paradox. Four interpretations of the solution to the paradox are offered. Finally, the common viewpoint of "Heraclitus vs Parmenides" is challenged through inspecting their respective histories and thought.
