Learn 20 verbs you can use to be more concise in English. "Concise" means that what you say or write is short and clear. You remove all of the unnecessary words and details.
I know many students want to speak faster in English. Increasing your speed comes with time and lots of practice. But, it's not always about speed. Using concise language can help you express yourself in a clear way.
After every four verbs, I give you a mini gapfill to help you review what you learned. Can you please let me know your score in the comments? Did you get 20/20? Or maybe 10/20?
Use the discussion questions at the end of this video. Answer the questions with a friend or speaking partner. The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll feel using these verbs in an English conversation.
1) Apart from a sponge, what other objects can absorb liquid?
2) Have you ever smelled something that lingered in the air for a long time?
What was it?
3) What kinds of things might disgust people in different cultures, and why?
4) Do you know anyone who tends to hoard items? What might be the reasons behind this behavior?
5) When was the last time you complimented someone?
When was the last time someone complimented you?
6) Can you give an example of how different colors can
complement each other in fashion or design?
7) In what situations is it appropriate to flatter someone,
and when might it be insincere?
8) Have you ever resented someone, and what did you do to overcome that feeling?
9) Why is it important to preheat the oven before baking certain dishes?
10) If you had to flee your home for some reason, what three things would you take with you?
11) How can teachers encourage students to participate actively in class?
12) What factors might discourage someone from pursuing their goals?
13) What do you feel is the difference between nagging and providing helpful reminders?
14) When is it important to assert yourself, and how can you do it effectively?
15) Can you think of a time you had to concede in an argument? How did it make you feel?
16) In what situations might it be necessary to conceal information, and is it always ethical?
17) Can you remember the last thing that stained your clothes, furniture, etc.?
18) When was the last time you got soaked by the rain?
19) How do you feel when someone stares at you, and how might cultural norms influence staring?
20) Can you give an example of a situation where someone's actions might undermine a team's efforts?
