Patellar Mobilization for Patellofemoral Pain and Dysfunction

Patellar manipulation, also known as patellar mobilization or manipulation, is a therapeutic technique commonly used in physiotherapy and manual therapy to address patellofemoral pain and dysfunction. This technique involves the manual movement or manipulation of the patella (kneecap) to improve its alignment, mobility, and function within the patellofemoral joint.

Understanding the Patellofemoral Joint:
The patellofemoral joint is formed by the articulation between the patella and the femur (thigh bone). It plays a crucial role in the biomechanics of the knee joint, facilitating smooth movement and distributing forces during activities such as walking, running, and jumping. However, factors such as muscular imbalances, biomechanical abnormalities, and overuse can lead to patellofemoral pain syndrome, characterized by pain and dysfunction around the kneecap.

Indications for Patellar Manipulation:
Patellar manipulation may be indicated for individuals experiencing patellofemoral pain syndrome, anterior knee pain, patellar malalignment, or restrictions in patellar mobility. Common signs and symptoms include pain with activities such as climbing stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting, as well as crepitus or grinding sensations around the kneecap.
