Jupiter's moon, Io, is the most volcanically active body in our solar system. Io volcanism takes many forms & some are very different from volcanism on Earth! One unusual style of volcanism that is extremely common on Io is lava lakes. Lava lakes on Io are called paterae, but how do paterae form? What kind of lava erupts from paterae? Is the style of volcanism consistent across paterae? In this video, I discus current hypotheses regarding lava lakes on Io!
