Located in the Kaimanawa Forest Park, the Tree Trunk Gorge track is a shared use walking and mountain biking track which explores the lower foothills of the Kaimanawa Ranges generally following the course of the Tongariro River. It's generally a good yearround track although you'll need to dress warmly and be prepared for the stream crossings if attempting during the winter months.

⬇ TRACK INFO:
Distance: 5km (oneway) / 10km return
Time: 1hr30m (walking)
Start/End: Urchin Campsite (off Kaimanawa Road) or Tree Trunk Gorge Road off SH1 23km south of Tūrangi
Grade: Advanced (due to unbridged stream crossings)
Dogs: Permitted with a DOC permit (obtainable from the Tūrangi iSite or DOC visitor centre)

⬇ TRACK NOTES:
Although the track is relatively well graded, it's very steep in places so moderate fitness is required. The easiest driving access to the track is via Tree Trunk Gorge road off State Highway 1 south of Turangi, although you can also access the track from the Urchin Campsite (but this requires a 510 min drive down a dirt road). There are plenty of small streams to cross along the way which are easy enough even after heavy rain, but there is a large tributary of the Tongariro River to cross close to the Tree Trunk Gorge end of the track which requires river safety skills and may be impassable in bad conditions.
