Appletreewick is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and its name is derived from the Old English of æppeltrēow wīc, which means the Appletree specialised farm or hamlet. The old dialectal pronunciation of the village name is a shortened 'Aptrick', which is sometimes still heard being used by the locals.

The village prospered from the year 1300 when Bolton Priory acquired its manor with its extensive sheep ranges and valuable lead mines. Charters for markets and a fair were granted and the latter remained important until the impact of the railways in the mid19th century.

St John's Church is an Anglican church which was originally constructed in the 17th century, as a pair of cottages. Appletreewick fell within the parish of St Wilfrid's Church, Burnsall, and in the 1890s William Stavert was appointed as its minister. Stavert decided to turn the derelict cottages into a chapelofease, and he designed the new church himself. It was completed in 1898, and was Grade II listed in 1954. The singlestorey building is constructed of stone with a stone slate roof. It consists of a single, rectangular, cell, and has four bays. The doorway has a chamfered surround and a fourcentred arched head, and the windows are mullioned.

Mock Beggar Hall is a beautiful Grade II listed building on the north side of the main street which has a long history going back to at least the 15th century. Also known as Monks Hall the building is associated with Bolton Priory , having once been a grange for that monastic house .

The Craven Arms pub was owned by Sir William Craven and has much of the village history on display including a fully heatherthatched cruck barn to look round. The cruck barn was the first one to be built in Upper Wharfedale in over 300 years and used original materials such as lime and horsehair to line the walls and sheep's wool for insulation.

Stocks have been used in parts of Europe more than 1000 years with the earliest recorded reference to stocks in Europe appearing in the Utrecht Psalter, which dates from around 820 AD. Stocks had become common in England by the mid14th century. In 1351 a law (the Statute of Labourers) was introduced requiring every town to provide and maintain a set of stocks. This had been implemented as a reaction to the Black Death, which had halved the population. The consequent scarcity of labour had enabled agricultural labourers to demand increased pay. The Statute attempted to discourage this trend by providing that anyone demanding (or offering) higher wages should be set in the stocks for up to 3 days.

Stocks were later used to control the unemployed. The Vagabonds and Beggars Act 1494 provided that “Vagabonds, idle and suspected persons shall be set in the stocks for three days and three nights and have none other sustenance but bread and water and then shall be put out of Town.”
