Pelvic Floor Relaxation to Relieve Pelvic Pain

Body Scanning

Body scanning can improve awareness of muscle tension. Involuntary clenching of the pelvic floor muscles often occurs without the individual noticing. Body scanning and awareness of muscle spasm are steps towards effective pelvic floor relaxation.

Deep Breathing (Diaphragmatic Breathing/Yoga Breathing)

Deep breathing exercises slow the nervous system and relax the pelvic floor muscles. Deep breathing promotes downward movement of the diaphragm through expansion of the chest wall and abdomen.

When you breathe in deeply, your diaphragm moves downwards, your abdominal muscles lengthen and gentle downward pressure is exerted onto your pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor should be able to move down slightly as you inhale. When you breathe out, your chest wall relaxes, your diaphragm moves upwards towards your chest and your pelvic floor should lift slightly within your pelvis.

Pelvic Floor Relaxation

Voluntary relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles involves letting go of pelvic floor tension. Physiotherapists teach pelvic floor relaxation as a skill to be used and practiced at home to reinforce clinical therapy in the clinic. Clinical therapy for treating pelvic floor spasm may involve pelvic muscle stretching and/or trigger point therapy via the anus or deep through the groin or buttocks.

This pelvic floor relaxation routine can be practiced daily by men with pelvic floor pain and tension as a home management strategy. It can take a number of months to learn to relax the pelvic floor muscles and this problem can return if it's triggered. Regular home practice is key to self management and gaining longterm relief from pelvic pain.
