Pentatonic scales can be so versatile in improvised solos. They can be used to play in any style from country, rock, metal, and in our case jazz! In the context of a jazz solo over chord changes, they give us the opportunity to achieve a more modern sound than we get with a more traditional bebop approach. In this lesson, I'll show you some essential techniques for mastering the five main pentatonic box shapes on the guitar. Then, we'll learn how to cover the whole range of the guitar in one go with a three note per string pattern. Finally, we'll delve into the near limitless world of pentatonic sequencing. I'll teach you guys four essential patterns for using the pentatonic scale in improvised solos. Next week, I'll be showing you guys how to use the sequencing we've learned today over some different cycles of chord changes to get a really unique and modern sound in your improvised solos. As a little preview, I'll teach you three phrases today using some of what we've learned so far over a iiVI progression in Bb major.
