About Stem Cell Donation Process

Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation is one of two methods of collecting bloodforming cells for bone marrow transplants. Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation Process is a nonsurgical procedure, called apheresis. The same bloodforming cells that are found in bone marrow are also found in the circulating (peripheral) blood

For 5 days leading up to your Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation Process , you will be given injections of a drug called filgrastim to increase the number of bloodforming cells (also called blood stem cells) in your bloodstream.

On the day of your Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation Process, your blood is removed through a needle in one arm and passed through a machine that will collect only the bloodforming cells. The remaining blood is returned to you through a needle in the other arm. This process is similar to what is used when donating blood platelets.

90% of all Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation Process are completed in 1 apheresis session, which may take up to 8 hours. The remaining 10% of the donations are completed in 2 apheresis sessions, which will take 4 to 6 hours each.

What is Bone Marrow Transplant?
A bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy bloodforming stem cells into your body to replace your damaged or diseased bone marrow. A bone marrow transplant is also called a stem cell transplant. You might need a bone marrow transplant if your bone marrow stops working and does not produce enough healthy blood cells. Bone marrow transplants may use cells from your own body (autologous transplant) or from a donor (allogeneic transplant).

Types of Bone Marrow Transplant
Autologous BMT : Auto means self. The stem cells in autologous transplants come from the same person who will get the transplant, so the patient is their own donor.
Allogeneic BMT: Allo means other. The stem cells in allogeneic transplants are from a person other than the patient, either a matched related or unrelated donor
