Dialysis can be of two types. In Peritoneal dialysis, the inside lining of your belly works as a natural filter. This is done more consistently than hemodialysis and it allows for a more flexible diet with kidney disease. In Hemodialysis, blood is taken out of your body into an artificial kidney machine which then uses tubes connected to the machine to bring blood back into your body.

No matter what you do with kidney disease, sometimes, you may end up on dialysis. Robert always focuses on ways to avoid dialysis but in some cases, dialysis may be the only option. In today’s video, he talks about the differences between Peritoneal dialysis and Hemodialysis. Robert did hemodialysis for about 2.5 years when his kidney disease was at its worst.

With all the experiences that Robert had with kidney disease, he tells us why peritoneal dialysis was less common than hemodialysis back in the day. Nowadays, with all the improvements in science and technology, much research shows that peritoneal dialysis is as effective as hemodialysis and it provides a lot of benefits.

With hemodialysis, you have to go to a center that provides hemodialysis. It’s very expensive to do it at home. With hemodialysis, most people go to a dialysis center for around three days a week for about four hours. In order to access your blood to do hemodialysis, you need a fistula surgery on a connection between an artery and a vein which allows for the dialysis needles.

Robert shows us his fistula surgery done over 20 years ago. It doesn’t look pretty but it’s very important. Fistula surgery can be painful but surgeries performed these days are more advanced and you may need more than one surgery. Robert explains why hemodialysis is not the ideal option anymore, especially with all the positive research about peritoneal dialysis. A majority of people on hemodialysis would experience other issues like headaches and fatigue.

Peritoneal dialysis is done by inserting a tube into your peritoneum and you have a machine at home that you run every day to perform dialysis on your own schedule. A majority of people who were on peritoneal dialysis tell us how it’s less painful and more manageable than hemodialysis. With peritoneal dialysis, a better, manageable lifestyle can be attained.

The decision is yours to make at the end of the day. With hemodialysis, you are looking at going to a center three to four times a day and sitting for long hours. Many people on hemodialysis also experience fatigue and headaches. With peritoneal dialysis, it can be done at home and your life is more manageable. A tremendous amount of selfcare is required with peritoneal dialysis and you’re more involved in the process. Robert strongly suggests engaging with people who have been under hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and make the decision for yourself. Both types of dialysis are as effective as each other.
