In 2004, Halo almost became a movie.

Bungie and Microsoft teamed up with Hollywood to bring the story of Master Chief, Cortana, and the Covenant to the big screen, with the help of Producer Peter Schlessel. Despite their best efforts and an extremely promising development, warring studios and massive egos led to the movie's cancellation.

The movie was set to be a coproduction between 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures. Alex Garland, best known for 28 Days Later, wrote the excellent initial pitch. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the minds behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy, were executive producers on the film. To direct, the film initially tapped Guillermo del Toro, before settling on a pre District 9 Neill Blomkamp. Not only was the talent behind this film extraordinary, they were also all Halo fans which makes this movie's cancellation all the more heartbreaking.
