Petit Aleph

2. Petit Aleph (1986), Philippe Manoury
This piece derives from Manoury’s 1985 work for voice and orchestra titled Aleph. He compiled the main motivic elements from Aleph into a solo piece for bass flute that is a mere summary of the overall work a “petit” version if you will. Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which is used in mathematics to notate the sequence of infinite sets. This infinite element is present in Manoury’s piece, as it avoids all modern modes and seems to continue without end.
