Firstorder reactions depend on how much substrate you have to react. More specifically, the reaction rate depends on how high the concentration of the substrate is. If you draw a firstorder reaction on a typicallyscaled linear graph, you will get a curve. It’s hard to judge a curve to see if it is truly logarithmic and extract information, which is where log axes come into play.

SemiLog paper is special graphing paper that has a logscaled yaxis with scaled boxes. Inspection works best when your bestfit line is drawn accurately. If you aren’t confident in drawing bestfit lines, you can always take the surefire way. Watch this video as we walk through semilog graphing.
