Multiple drugs are often used in clinical practice because patients frequently present with multiple chronic diseases. Several medications are frequently administered concurrently to improve drug adherence. Although this may be a preferred clinical strategy, administering two or more drugs at the same time increases the possibility of drugdrug interactions. As the risk of drugdrug interactions rises, so does the risk of debilitating, even fatal, adverse drug events.
This pharmacology lecture discusses various mechanisms of CYP450mediated drugdrug interactions including competitive, noncompetitive and irreversible inhibition.
