He inherited the Spanish domains of his father and began the line of the Spanish Habsburgs. Meanwhile his uncle received the German lands, beginning the Austrian Habsburgs. Philip II was a strong King but needed an heir. As a result he married his double first cousin Maria Manuela of Portugal, then his first cousin once removed Queen Mary I of England the daughter of King henry VIII. His third wife was Princess Elizabeth de Valois of France, and finally he married his niece Anna of Austria. In the end, he managed to get one surviving male heir Philip III who inherited his domains when he died in 1598.
