In this film we take a close look at the Piper L4 Cub nicknamed the Grasshopper, this little aircraft spent many of its flights flying low and hopping over hedges.
Landing at RAF Bolt Head in October 1943 Squadron Leader Geddes the station commander was on a return flight from RAF Exeter, when he made an approach to land he was confronted with very high winds, he managed to land on the second attempt but while leaving the runway the ground crew could not hold the aircraft and it flipped over on its back, Squadron Leader Geddes was unhurt.
We also take a look at Major Charles Carpenter who fitted bazooka rockets to his little Piper L4 and attacked German transport columns with great success. There is also some rare footage of Piper Cubs flying low along Slapton Sands during the military exercises.
