ARE YOU STRETCHING THE PIRIFORMIS WRONG?

The piriformis muscle is WEIRD. We are taught that it is an external rotator, and yet all the piriformis stretches out there put the hip joint into external rotation in order to stretch it. That doesn’t make sense! Or does it?
.
It turns out that beyond 90 degrees of hip flexion, the piriformis is actually an INTERNAL rotator, but less than 90 degrees and it’s an external rotator.
.
So…. There are many opposite positions that will all stretch this weird muscle.
.
It’s important in case you’re having low back and glute pain that goes down the leg (sciatica) and you’re looking to properly stretch this muscle in the hopes of relieving sciatic pain.
