Piriformis Syndrome Pain At Night OR Trouble Sleeping? Try This!

Dr. Charlie Johnson, PT

Is Piriformis Syndrome (deep pain in the glute muscle/ buttock) or sciatica keeping you from getting a good night's sleep? Sleep is SUPER important for your body & the healing process (the less you sleep, the more you'll hurt). So let's talk about why your nighttime routine (before bed) could be contributing to the problem and how you can tweak things for more comfort!

In this video, I share with you some tips to set yourself up for a better night's sleep. And instead of telling you what you 'should' or 'shouldn’t' do (like lots of other videos on YouTube), I’m going to go deeper and I’m going to help you really understand WHY your pain may be worse at night and causing issues sleeping.

In this video specifically, we’re going to talk about your nighttime routine why it could be causing a problem, and how you can tweak things for more comfort.

Keep in mind that nighttime routine is just one of many variables that can affect your sleep... other things to consider would be: your sleeping position, your mattress/surface, etc. If you're trying to get better sleep while dealing with piriformis syndrome and/or sciatica pain, check out this video for sure.

So if you have pain in your back, butt, or leg (sciatica) that feels worse later in the day or at night... and you find it difficult to fall asleep because of it, then I’m going to share with you exactly how you can troubleshoot this problem so that you can begin to identify why this is happening, what’s making your pain worse, and some specific experiments I recommend you begin running to figure out what you need to do to get relief.

First things first, consider tweaking your activity at night. For example, if you’re relatively inactive get active. Find some form of exercise that feels safe and get the blood pumping. If you’re active before bed, try being inactive. The goal is not to do this forever, but to pick up clues about what impacts or influences your pain, for same, better, or worse.

Next, consider the position of your body and what you’re doing before bed. Could you be placing yourself in a position that aggravates your back, piriformis, or sciatica problem? Good question. To find out begin with a mini self assessment, with the goal of identifying specific yucky motions that make your back, butt, or sciatica pain worse. Then, ask yourself how are these yucky motions showing up in my nighttime routine? I include examples of each to give you an idea of what I mean. This helps you discover that which 'you don’t know, you don’t know'.

Then, avoid or tweak these positions temporarily so that you stop picking the scab.

Final tip use movement as medicine before you go to bed. Have a motion that gives you relief? Use it before you go to bed to act as a pill. If you’re not aware of a motion that reduces your pain pick the yummiest motion from the self assessment and do it!
