On the 24th of February, 1989, a United Airlines Boeing 747 carrying 355 passengers from Honolulu to Auckland was rocked by an explosion almost 23,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean.
A massive hole had appeared in the cabin, sucking anything that wasn’t holding on. This was followed by the failure of two engines along with damage to the right wing and aircraft systems.
The next 25 minutes would become a battle against fate as they tried desperately to get their aircraft on the ground in pitch dark conditions.
