PLANESPOTTING | MANCHESTER & HEATHROW Airports | 1980s | Tristar | Part 10

I recently found some of my old photos that I took at Manchester and Heathrow Airports, in the 1980s. I used to keep detailed logs of my plane spotting trips from 1982 to 1984, this has helped me with some detective work to date exactly the majority where I couldn’t be sure I have dated as a year or range where the aircraft had been seen multiple times.
My photos are deteriorating, so I have decided to digitalise them and share them in videos. I hope you enjoy watching this series of videos.
Looking back the 1980s for me were some of the best times for planespotting. We used to be able to walk right out along the 3 piers at Manchester Airport. And, at Heathrow Airport access to the spectator’s terrace of the Queens Building. When the terraces were closed or to get some photos or registrations on the other side of the airport, I used to spend time in the multi storey car parks, with never any problems with security.
I haven’t been back to Manchester Airport in many years, The Airport pub looks interesting with a large beer garden very close to the runway, but I have seen a high fence which would make photography difficult.
At Heathrow, Myrtle Avenue has become well known close to 27L, I have stayed several times at the Thistle Hotel at Terminal 5 end, you can get some good landing shots on 9L from the hotel bar/restaurant terrace.
