Plastics. Plastics. Plastics. Wonderfully New In The 1950s

We took plastic for granted back then. Everyone began using it and thought it wonderful. So easy. So pure. So clean.. When I unbox a purchase from Amazon these days and notice that whatever I am purchasing is oftentimes small but the plastic packaging is huge, I see the results of this brilliant invention. We had no idea of its environmental impact back then. There was aluminum foil – tinfoil. And of course they were paper bags. At that time, most of us didn't think about the environment at all. This was way before birthday or anything like that. For so many things, plastic seemed wonderful. My mom would give me either a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a tunafish thing which to take to school wrapped in plastic which when I opened it, looked and tasted like it was just made. Miraculous. Of course this public relations "documentary" sounds like pure selling today but back then, it sounded like something we would all want. Looking at one of my Amazon purchases, a hard drive, the plastic around it is so thick and so heavy that even with my scissors it is hard to cut open. In the second that I do, all that plastic just goes in the recycle bin. Seems crazy. But what is the alternative?
