Color is really our only tool when painting. You’re presented with a series of piles of paint and are required to use them to tell a story of mood, values, lighting, energy and other abstract ideas. The best advice I can give the aspiring Plein air painter is to begin with a sketch. Have a plan as you approach design and composition and values. As these patterns begin to emerge from your scene, your next objective, once satisfied is color.
