PMDG 737 NGX – NDB Approach Tutorial

The dreaded NDB Approach! Despite the technology being over 70 years old, they are still being used to this day! Thankfully on a modern aircraft like a 737800 with a full Navigational and Approach database in its FMS, you can generate the required magenta line to follow, matching the inbound course and vertical profile precisely using LNAV and VNAV.

Join me in the hold at La Palma (GCLA/SPC) as we fly the NDB Approach for RW36, an approach which is offset by 14 degrees to the right of centreline due to terrain. This Approach has very high minima so if you’re not visual by 1600ft you must fly the missed approach procedure and immediately make a turn to the right to avoid terrain.

Thankfully it’s a beautiful day so I plan to disconnect at the minima and fly the last part with the A/P and A/T disconnected and lining up manually to land on the runway.
