Ask any pilot who has flown a Soviet, WW2 Polikarpov fighter what they're like to land, and they'll all tell you they're scary! This video shows why it's a small fighter, that lands fast, with poor forward visibility on the ground ... what more could you want for an exciting airshow display?

At the start of the war these fighters were the cream of the Russian Air Forces, and they had served with distinction in the Spanish Civil War. By the time Germany invaded Russia, the aircraft were beyond their bestbefore date, but they nevertheless put up an impressive fight against the German invaders.

This video is a short, essentially unedited clip from our recently acquired archive of raw video footage from many early Warbirds Over Wanaka shows.
