Portobelo Panama - arguably the most important port in the Americas
This port was named in 1502 by Columbus himself. This became ‘the other side’ of the Royal Road, or the Road of Crosses for so many deaths.
All the wealth plundered from South America’s Andean mines passed through. So did many thousands of related peoples and, of course, pirates. Sir Francis Drake even died here.
