Shani refers to the planet Saturn and is depicted as a male deity in the Puranas. It is also one of the 9 heavenly bodies known as Navagraha in Hindu astrology. Also known as Ara, Kona or Kroda, he is said to be the son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (Shadow) according to Hindu literature.

His iconography consists of a dark (black) figure and is represented as riding a chariot, carrying a bow and arrow and mounted on a vulture or crow.
Shani is found wearing a blue flower and sapphire. He is depicted in black clothes, holding a sword, arrows and two daggers.
He is lame and has a limp because his knee was injured when he fought as a child with Yama.
His chariot travels slowly across the sky drawn by piebald horses.
Shani is the basis for Shanivara, one of the seven days that make a week in the Hindu calendar. This day corresponds to Saturday – after Saturn in the GrecoRoman convention for naming the days of the week.

He is considered inauspicious, a deity who gets mad easily and one who takes thorough revenge for whatever made him upset.
