This video provides an overview of preoperative fasting.

It begins with the justification for fasting before the induction of anesthesia.

Then it explores the evidence to support ‘NPO after midnight’ as a recommendation for all patients.

Preoperative fasting refers to the period leading up to a medical procedure when a patient avoids all foods and beverages.

In other words, it’s a specific window of time before an intervention when a patient is nil per os, or NPO, which is a Latin phrase that translates to ‘nothing by mouth.’
