(10 Mar 1989) President George H.W. Bush named House Republican Whip Richard Cheney of Wyoming as secretary of defense to replace John Tower, whose nomination was rejected Thursday by the Senate. Bush hailed the sixterm congressman as a respected man of principle who has served the country with distinction.
