Priming If you want to start a centrifugal pump by switching it on, it will not start delivering water promptly. It is due to the fact initially inside the casing of pump air is filled. When we start the pump then lnitially the impeller starts spinning the air inside the casing which cannot develop sufficient centrifugal force to pull the water and deliver it. To make the water to flow, first of all we have to fill the casing with water and then start the pump.In such case the sufficient centrifugal force will be developed and the pump will start delivering water. Further the action of water flow will remain continued because water is entering the pump continuesly (casing is always filled with water not air) so no problem of 'insufficient centrifugal force' arises once the pump starts delivering water. The action of initially filling of casing with water is called as Priming. You can learn the physical significance of priming in centrifugal pumps by this easy to understand lecture.
