Profile Tool for Surface Comparison using QGIS

Surveying Solutions

To create a profile tool for surface comparison using QGIS, you can follow these steps to analyze and visualize the elevation profiles of different surfaces.
StepbyStep Guide for Surface Comparison Using QGIS
1. Prepare Your Data
• Import Point Data:
o Load the presurvey and postsurvey point data into QGIS. Ensure both datasets have the same latitudes and longitudes, differing only in the Z (elevation) values.
• Interpolate Surfaces:
o Use TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network) interpolation to create surfaces from the presurvey and postsurvey points.
Go to Processing go to Toolbox.
Search for TIN interpolation.
Set the input points for presurvey and postsurvey separately, creating two raster layers (one for each survey).
2. Visualize Profiles Using Profile Tool Plugin
• Install Profile Tool Plugin:
o If not already installed, go to Plugins go to Manage and Install Plugins.
o Search for Profile Tool and install it.
• Create Profile Line:
o Use the Add Line Feature tool to draw a line across the area of interest on the map.
Activate the Digitizing toolbar.
Select the Add Line Feature tool and draw the line.
• Generate Elevation Profiles:
o Open the Profile Tool from Plugins go to Profile Tool.
o In the Profile Tool window:
Add both TINinterpolated raster layers (presurvey and postsurvey) to the tool.
Select the line you drew.
Click Create Profile to visualize the elevation profiles of both surfaces.
• Distinguish Profiles:
o The Profile Tool will display the profiles using different colors for each surface, allowing you to visually compare the presurvey and postsurvey elevations.
3. Direct Point Profile Comparison
• Add Point Layers:
o Load the presurvey and postsurvey point layers directly into the Profile Tool.
o Ensure each layer represents the points with elevation values for pre and post surveys respectively.
• Create and Distinguish Profiles:
o Follow the same steps in the Profile Tool to draw profiles from the point layers.
o Use different colors to distinguish between the presurvey and postsurvey profiles.
