In this edition of Tarikh, Divyanshi Talks about the 1963 Hazratbal Shrine theft incident. The shrine, which houses the hair of the Prophet Muhammad, MoieMuqqadas, was established in the 17th century during the time of Mughal emperor Shahjajhan. On the night of December 27, 1963, a group of thieves broke into the shrine and made off with the sacred relic. The theft sparked outrage and protests across the region and beyond, with many demanding that the relic be recovered and the perpetrators brought to justice.The incident resulted in widespread protests across the Indian subcontinent with riots in several areas. The incident became a diplomatic nightmare of India’s first Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
