Protect and Survive (1975)- The UK's Public Information Nuclear War Precautions Film.

War Precautions

Protect and Survive was adapted for television as a series of twenty short public information films. The films were classified, intended for transmission on all television channels if the government determined that nuclear attack was likely within 72 hours.

The films were produced by Richard Taylor Cartoons, who also produced the Charley Says child safety films and children's animation Crystal Tipps and Alistair. They are similar in content to the booklets, detailing the same instructions using voiceover narration, sound effects, and a combination of simple stopmotion and illustrated animation. Patrick Allen was chosen to narrate.

This video contains all 20 episodes in one.

Influenced by the media, and reinforced by every retelling, a myth developed around Protect and Survive which has created a distorted, parallel version of the campaign. It has even led to false memories – people who claim they were frightened out of their wits by the pamphlet’s arrival in their letterbox, even though it was never actually distributed like that; people terrified by the broadcast of the animated films on TV (of which only extracts were ever shown). Of course, the myth built up around Protect and Survive is often quite far removed from the reality.
