Protein Synthesis: Transcription | A Level Biology Revision | AQA

Follow
Tailored Tutors

Protein synthesis starts with Transcription.

The enzyme DNA Helicase unzips the DNA allowing RNA free nucleotides to attach to the DNA template strand via complementary base pairing, then RNA Polymerase joins the nucleotides together.

All A Level Biology AQA, OCR & Edexcel students will need to know the structure of molecules of messenger RNA (mRNA) and this process of making RNA from DNA.

* EXAMP TIP:
1. The role of RNA polymerase in joining mRNA nucleotides is a key point.
2. In prokaryotes, transcription results directly in the production of mRNA from DNA (no introns or splicing)
3. In eukaryotes, transcription results in the production of premRNA; this is then spliced to form mRNA.
4. Transcription is SUPER IMPORTANT to learn, you will build on this topic in year 2 as well!
