Sunday marks nine months of war between Israel and Hamas. Israeli protesters blocked highways across the country Sunday, calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down and demanding a ceasefire that could return hostages still being held by Hamas.

It comes after at least 16 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinian families on Saturday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. More than 50 others were also reported injured in the attack.

Israeli Defense Forces say they were targeting gunmen who were using the area as a hideout. Hamas is denying that claim, saying none of their fighters were at the school.
