Providence (2022) is the capital of Rhode Island in the United States of America (USA) and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. The state of Rhode Island is derived from the Dutch who called the area 'Rode Eiland' (Red Island). Providence is one of the oldest cities in the USA as it was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams. As a Reformed Baptist, he named the area "God's merciful Providence" as the city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay. Providence has a population of 190,000.
