Pruning a grapevine is essential for healthy grape growth. Most grapevine pruning videos are targeted at professional vineyards. But for those who grow grapes in their city homes, terraces or small farms, a simple pruning approach may work.

In this video, Manisha Lath Gupta from Aanandaa Permaculture Farm, shares her tips on how to prune a grapevine growing in your garden.

A grapevine has a trunk, two arms, spurs and canes.

The trunk is the main stem of the grapevine, going up the trellis.
The arms are the two branches which spread on either side on the trellis.
The spur is the node which repeatedly growing after pruning and produces canes.
Canes are stems produced by the grapevine, after the grape fruit has been produced and harvested.

Grapes grow on old wood. So we need the spurs to keep producing new growth with grapes each year. In order to make this happen, we trim back the canes leaving only one or two nodes which will trigger new growth.

Any wimpish thin canes are cut from the base. The vine is shaped and steered around the trellis, such that it grows in a more structured and systematic way.
