Portrait drawing can be tricky in charcoal. If you learn to utilize the harsh properties of charcoal to your benefit you can create some awesome expressionist pieces. It only takes very simple materials: Strathmore drawing paper, generals compressed charcoal, blending stump, kneaded eraser, and primo HB charcoal pencil.

Remember to practice your foundational skills to develop your personal style upon them. Skill somes before style.
