The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have approved the proposed airport at the original site in Purandar, clearing all technical hurdles for the project. According to Murlidhar Mohol, recently appointed as the Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation, about 99 percent of the technical issues related to the proposed airport have been addressed. The next crucial step is land acquisition.

Regarding the Pune airport runway expansion and the new terminal, the Union Home Minister has approved the Central Industrial Security Force's (CISF) proposal to allocate 241 personnel for the new terminal building.
To accommodate larger D and E type aircraft, the runway needs to be extended, requiring 35 acres of land. While Ctype aircraft range from 24 to 36 meters in size, Dtype span 3652 meters, and Etype measure between 52 to 65 meters. Funds for acquiring the necessary 35 acres will be jointly raised by the state government and local bodies, including the Pune and PimpriChinchwad Municipal Corporations (PMC and PCMC) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
