Introduction

The QBZ191 Automatic Rifle is a Chinese assault rifle designed and manufactured by Norinco. It is chambered for the 5.8×42 millimeters cartridge and serves as the newgeneration service rifle for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and People's Armed Police (PAP). The designation "QBZ" stands for "light weapon (Qīng Wŭqì) rifle (Bùqiāng) automatic (Zìdòng)." The rifle was formally unveiled during the 70th Anniversary National Day military parade on October 1, 2019, carried by troopers of the PLA Ground Force and People's Armed Police.

Design

The QBZ191 uses a conventional configuration, offering greatly improved ergonomics, ambidextrous usability, and better reliability in various environments. It features various barrel lengths and handguard configurations.
The QBZ191 has a fulllength Picatinny rail on top and comes with new 3× daylight prismatic optics (QMK152 and QMK171A) and an optional thermal sight. It also features foldable backup iron sights. The rifle's upper and lower receivers are made of aluminum alloy, while the handguard, pistol grip, and telescoping stock are made of polymer. The design includes a shortstroke piston gas operation with a rotating bolt, a rightside reciprocating charging handle, and a leftside boltrelease button.
The QBZ191 offers improved modularity and customization, including a 4position adjustable buttstock, ambidextrous fire selector, and a lengthened magazine release lever for speedreloading. It uses a new polymer magazine with a redesigned surface texture and an ammunitionchecking window, with an optional fully transparent composite magazine. The handguard can accommodate accessories like flashlights, laser modules, foregrips, and bipods, and the weapon can be equipped with a bayonet, sound suppressor, and underbarrel grenade launcher.

The QBZ191 is chambered for the Chineseproprietary 5.8×42 millimeters caliber with redesigned DBP191 ammunition for better ballistic performance. It comes in three variants: a standard rifle with a 368.3 millimeters (14.5 inches) barrel, a carbine version (QBZ192) with a 266.7 millimeters (10.5 inches) barrel, and a longbarreled designated marksman rifle (QBU191). The standard QBZ191 has a fullauto rate of fire of 750 rounds per minute, and the QBU191 retains fullauto capability and can be configured as a light support weapon with a drum magazine.
