Quick Tip: Precision Screwdrivers for Gunsmithing

Follow
Brownells, Inc.

We've all been drilled to use proper gunsmithing screwdrivers when working on firearms, right? Well, Brownells Gun Tech™ Steve Ostrem shares with us a screwdriver technique that'll save you time AND protect your (or your customers') guns from damage. Use the correctfitting gunsmithing screwdriver, such as a Brownells MagnaTip®, to loosen the screw. Then switch to a smaller precision screwdriver with a rotating head. It enables you to spin out the alreadyloosened screw a lot faster. And since you don't have to apply much torque to spin the screw, you're less likely to slip and ding the gun's finish. Even if you do slip, the screwdriver is so light it's far less likely to cause damage. When reinstalling the screw, the smaller screwdriver gives you a better feel for when the screw first engages the threads, so you won't damage them. Spin the screw back in, then final tighten with your MagnaTip® or similar screwdriver. This technique really helps prevent overtightening screws.
